Set in rural Ireland in 1981, the story follows Cait, the shy nine-year-old daughter of abusive and impoverished parents who have many children. Anticipating the arrival of another baby, they send Cait to live with her distant middle-aged relatives, Eibhlín and Seán. As Cait adjusts to her new surroundings and community, she discovers things that could affect their relationships.
